Cambodian Settlers Glaze a Donut Trail

To the small towns of Northeast Texas, Cambodian families bring a sticky niche business. Set your alarm and work up an appetite.

The state’s Heritage Commission calls it The Forest Trails Region – this chunk of Northeast Texas barely rolling from the Arkansas line to down around Lufkin. But anyone with half an appetite will miss the forest for the donut signs.

There’s a new heritage happening here, as Cambodian immigrants have blazed a Donut Trail. In every town from Mt. Pleasant south and west to Athens, there seem to be donut enterprises on most every corner. All the shops we stopped in were Cambodian-owned.

“In Cambodia they don’t know what a donut is,” said Kheang Chheng. But they sure do in Gladewater, Texas (pop. 6100). It’s about noon, closing time; Chheng, who’s been here at the Donut Box since 3 a.m. rests his elbows on the big and nearly empty glass case. His aunt who lives in Kilgore, a couple of towns east, has owned the business four years. “We bought it from an American owner,” Chheng explains. “It was a barbecue shop,” a reconverted Sonic drive-in.

Our family participated in the Asian Festival in San Antonio on February 9th. This is the 4th year we have participated, representing the Khmer Association of San Antonio. We were very fortunate to have several friends and members of the community help us this year. With their help we were able to put on a fashion show showing off the several beautiful Cambodian outfits. We also had our usual Khmer cultural display booth. And this year I did a guest lecture on Khmer wedding ceremonies, using our own wedding video to describe the ceremony. We had a wonderful time.

Jeffrey’s English teacher, Mrs. Vasbinder, had her students write poems, and then held a poetry night at the school. Jeffrey brought home a great poem that we though was really cool. Here it is:

I’m From Poem

I am from electronics, from Game Cubes, and steel.
I’m from the red brick, 4 bedrooms, and 2.5 bathroom house.
I’m from some trees and grass.
I’m from Cambodian New Year on April, long legs &
arms, Phal and Wayne, Mao and Wright.
I’m from complaining and sad.
I’m from “chillax”, and “THIS IS TAKING FOR 1,000,000 YEARS!!!!”

That poem is so Jeffrey. Anyway, that wasn’t the poem he read at poetry night. Instead he read a love poem about a girl he has a crush on. I’ll post it later when I find it, but it started with “I love you more than chicken nuggets.” The target of his affection was also there, and Jeffrey pointed to her at the end of his poem, emmitting chuckles and “awes” from the auidience, and a young girl who turned bright red.

On Tuesday, Jeffrey wowed us with his musical talent. He started playing trumpet this semester, and he and 100+ other kids in the Stinson Middle School Beginning Band put on a Christmas Concert. I warned Phal before the concert to be prepared for a painful evening. I was wrong. The band sounded great! And they didn’t just play the little 2-line ditties from their beginning band book, but played actual sheet music arrangements of Christmas songs.

We’ve been amazed at and grateful for the talents Jeffrey has been developing, and feel lucky to have a great son. Given his condition and the fact that weren’t sure if he’d ever learn to talk, we never imagined so many years ago that he’d be reciting poetry and performing music.

Catherine turned 7 today! She’s getting older so fast, I told her she’s not allowed to have any more birthdays the next few years. Here’s a couple of videos. Forgive the bad singing –its a tradition in our family to make it as horrible as possible.

Halloween was lots of fun this year. Michael was a police officer, Catherine a pioneer, Jeffrey was Ash Katchum from Pokemon, and Phal was a witch. The kids got to go trunk-or-treating at a Halloween party at the church, and then regular trick-or-treating on Halloween.

The candy isn’t good for them, so I’m trying to help them eat as fast as possible to get rid of it.

 We also went to Sea World to use our return tickets from when we went earlier in the summer. The kids were afraid to see any of the scary stuff related to Halloween at night. But we got to see all the shows and had a lot of fun.

In addition to publishing traditional academic research, we have been very interested in publishing creative works by native Southeast Asian Americans. I’m very excited that we have finally received and have been able to publish some submissions in this area!

Bryan Thao Worra is an established Laotian American poet whose poetry has been published widely. I was fortunte to run into Bryan at a Laotian National conference which just happened to be at Arizona State University at the same time I was there for the Linguistic Minority Research Conference. He was very excited to learn of JSSAEA, and subsequently submitted four excellent poems to us: Snakehead Fish; Departures; Capitol; and Preparations for Southeast Asia. We were very excited to recieve a submission from Sumeia Williams, a Vietnamese American poet whose work has also been published widely. Sumeia was born in Vietnam, and adopted by an American family. Other recent publications include a poem written by a young Thai student who lived in American shortly while his mother was in graduate school, and a review of Stacey Lee’s excellent book on Hmong American high school students, Up Against Whiteness: Race, School, and Immigrant Youth. I explained that my wife was at school, and I was about to head off to a meeting that would go until 12:00. The nice person on the phone said, don’t worry, and just bring the pants as soon as I could. A few minutes later I got an e-mail from the school adding the fact that Jeffrey would be in in-school suspension (ISS) until I brought his long pants to school. The person on the phone had stressed over and over again that Jeffrey was not in trouble; when I apologized repeatedly for my ignorance of the dress-code policy, she insisted I had no reason to apologize. The e-mail even said the same thing. Yet, here Jeffrey was being detained — locked down in a room, barred from his classrooms, declared unworthy to receive “Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills” because of his offending attire.

I couldn’t stand the thought of–or the irony of–Jeffrey being denied an education due to my ignorance of the dress code while I as sitting in an important College of Education and Human Development meeeting. I rushed home, got the pants, dropped them off at the school, and got Jeffrey released from the Stinson Prison. When I returned to UTSA, there was no parking anywhere. I had to use the pay-as-you-go-lot, far from my meeting location (so much for my $250 Faculty A parking pass).  I was over an hour late for my meeting.

In case you can’t tell, this experience has greatly frustrated me. While I support the school’s dress code–and agree wholeheartedly with their right to have one and enforce it–I find it unethical to deny a child’s right to learn simply because of a misunderstanding that is no fault of the student. The dress code policy was burried in the mountain of paper my wife I received from different school orientation meetings.

I wonder, does the school have research providing strong evience that a 6th grade-boy’s kneecaps pose such a threat to the learning environment of the school, that he must be detained and hidden from faculty and students? Does occasional kneecap exposure lower TAKS scores by a standard deviation?

When I dropped off the pants, I told to the person in the VP’s office that I felt it was innapropropriate to deny Jeffrey’s right to learn over the shorts issue. She claimed he was given work to do in ISS, and thus was not being denied his right to learn. Oh really? Like that’s the same thing.

I got a phone call at the end of the day from his English teacher. Jeffrey missed her class first period, and thus was not able to turn in or complete work. On one of the assignments, he will receive a late penalty. 

It seems to me that a more reasonable, a more rationale, a more ethical (and less stupid) policy would be at least to issue a warning on the first offense, and take that opportunity to ensure that the student and family are properly informed of the policy and the dire consequences in case of future infractions. And if the school honestly believes that knee cap epidermis prevents quality teaching and learning, then why not keep a few pairs of pants in the office students can wear, at least until parents arrive?

Zero tolerance policies for minor first-time dress code infractions make zero sense. While its certainly effective in enforcing the dress code (we’ll never break it again, I swear!), is it really worth it? Is this how the school wants to start out its relationship with new students and parents? The message to parents is clear — Dress code enforcement is more important than teaching and learning.

I sincerely hope from this point forward, his school focusses more attention on meeting his unique educational needs and less attention on his knees.
